If you live in the Northwest or if you can travel, Adoption Ministry offers an International Adoption Training which meets the requirement for Adoption Education.  This class is a requirement for Washington, Idaho and Oregon families but is also open to and highly recommended for other adopting families.

Sally Carmen, OTR/L
Sally is an Occupational Therapist and Certified Adoption/Foster Care Therapist practicing in Gig Harbor, WA.  She is the owner and director of The Center for Therapeutic Intervention where she works with adoptive families as well as children with sensory processing issues.  She will discuss attachment and share strategies to enhance attachment in an adopted child.
Anne Kalkbrenner, RN, MN
Anne is a pediatric nurse who has taught nursing at Seattle Pacific University and the University of Washington.  Anne and her husband Tim adopted a baby girl from Adoption Ministry’s orphanages in Ethiopia.  Anne will cover common medical concerns when adopting internationally, what tests you’ll want to get once home and make very helpful suggestions about things to take with you when you travel to Ethiopia.

Cathy Carlson
Cathy is mom to eleven children, ranging in age from 11 to 20 years old.  Two of her children were adopted domestically and seven were adopted from Ethiopia.  Cathy will share her practical wisdom about parenting strategies, family dynamics and the prevelance of sexual and physical abuse in children from Ethiopia.

Liane Wolbert, MA, ESA
Liane’s experience in adoption includes counseling young women with unplanned pregnancies, adoption education and writing homestudies.  Liane has traveled to Ethiopia many times to lead missions teams for YWAM.  She will cover issues of grief and loss in adopted children, education and language issues, and dealing with cultural and transracial issues.

Joy Casey, Executive Director Adoption Ministry of YWAM
Joy, with her husband Dennis, has four adult children, two of whom were adopted, one with special needs.  She has worked in the adoption field for 26 years and founded Adoption Ministry in 2002.  She will help couples prepare for coming home with your adopted child, how to establish a network of support and developmental issues in internationally adopted children.

Adoption Learning Partners Online Training

 

If you live outside of the Washington/Oregon/Idaho area and are unable to attend Adoption Ministry’s training, Adoption Learning Partners offers a wide variety of Hague-approved courses.  This training is on-line.  It is highly effective if you begin these courses BEFORE your homestudy interviews. 

We recommend:

With Eyes Wide Open“  = 4 credit hours

Medical Issues in International Adoptions“  = 2.5 credit hours 

Conspicuous Families“  = 1.5 credit hours 

If you take the recommended courses, you will need to select at least 2 more credit hours to bring your total hours up to the required 10.

Please note that the “Adoption Tax Credit”, “Becoming Your Child’s Best Advocate” and “Life Books” will not apply to the 10 required hours.  You will be asked for an agency code when you sign up.  The code is: F204CH.
